THIS WEEKS FOSTER DOG.....

TIDO- WHAT A DEAR OLD BOY THIS LITTLE GUY IS!

I personally have only one dog(not pictured here but in my previous blogs) who is a mixed breed that I rescued from the shelter. She is fawn colored and weighs about 8 pounds. I am currently studying with the Animal Behaviorist College where I learned that we must never call someones non-purebred dog a mutt, mongrel or even a mixed breed. Dogs whose parents are both of unknown origins are to be officially and politely referred to as "All-American". Sounds good to me, often all-american dogs are the best kind with less intense/tenacious tendencies and fewer health problems as well. I am glad and proud to own an all-american dog!

However, I always have a second dog living with me at any given time, my all-american foster dogs. These are animals from a local rescue group who are saved from shelters where they are on the list to be euthanized. They are often special needs dogs with medical problems or super old dogs or dogs who have displayed aggression making them less than ideal candidates for adoption. But I am discovering otherwise. Being a foster home for unwanted dogs has been the most rewarding thing that I've done in my life. It does not make me any money or earn me any material wealth but I find the experience life altering in more important ways.......helping these little creatures find themselves and then find forever homes makes my heart swell. Each and every one of the dogs I've taken in has proven to have their own endearing personality and they get a name accordingly. I have not yet had a "bad dog" and I know in my heart I never will because there simply is no such thing. These dogs, though they may start out timid and withdrawn, they just want a human to love and they are always willing and ready to give that love uncondtionally no matter how they have been previosly neglected and betrayed by the human speices. I want each of these deserving little souls to find the peace they deserve in the forever home they desperately need.

My little foster dog since sunday is named "tido". He is 9 or 10 years old and only 3 lbs. He is a sadly overbred teacup chihuahua. This has resulted in a hole in his unformed skull. He is so tiny but still gets up and trots around on his little toothpick legs. He does not pee inside and loves to be in a baby sling right on your body which is not at all a pain since he is so light. He cannot eat kibble or hard stuff and being all into organic and health food, it took me awhile to decide what the best things to feed him would be. I did not want to put him on that cheap wet canned food so full of preservatives and chemicals. So right now he is doing fresh plain white- meat chicken from the Whole Foods salad bar, mixed with a little organic babyfood vegetables out of the jar ( carrots and green beans) plus a pinch of blue green algae powder. He literally only eats like an ounce of food over the course of a whole day! Next time I will have to tell you about what my permanent dog eats. She is a joy to feed as she has become well adjusted to the addition of fresh produce to her diet. She is also usually jealous of the foster dogs so she will eat most anything for praise and attention!

let's start blogging about our pets!

Hi there to all you who love your companion animals. I know there are a lot of you and that more than half of the american population have a pet of some kind which is really great because studies are proving they are good for our health. Apparently our blood pressure goes down and we create positive, calming endorphins just from petting a friendly dog or purring kitty. And caring for a pet, especially a dog keeps us more active and gets us out and in the fresh air a few more times a day than we normally would be. So what can we do to return the good health vibe back to our dear little furry friends? Let's start talking and sharing on the subject! I can't wait to hear what people are doing to take the best care of their animals they possibly can. I have some ideas and advice myself, too......
